Annotation
The article attempts to answer the question: what is accreditation as a social phenomenon? What is its nature, its hidden functions, and its place in the system of relations between society, media, and government? The present study is an attempt at a philosophical and sociological understanding of accreditation, going beyond its technical reality to understanding its essence. The novelty of the proposed approach lies in the very angle of view: we consider accreditation not as a technical procedure, but as a social institution, as a form of symbolic exchange, as a mechanism for the production and reproduction of social differences. The functions of accreditation are highlighted — selective, cognitive, reduction and control. We distinguish between explicit functions of accreditation (what it is formally intended for) and latent ones (what it actually produces in the social system). The highlighted four functions cover both levels, allowing you to see both the official purpose of the institute and its hidden effects. The criterion for distinguishing these functions was their correspondence to the four fundamental dimensions of social existence, which are considered constitutive in various theoretical systems. The first dimension is differentiation and hierarchization (a selective function); the second is mutual recognition
of subjects (a cognitive function); the third is the management of complexity and uncertainty (a reductive function); the fourth is the exercise of power and the maintenance of order (a control function). Collectively, they describe both horizontal connections between subjects (recognition) and vertical (selection, control), as well as the relationship of the system to the environment (reduction of complexity). Thus, the allocation of four functions sets a complete coordinate system for the analysis of accreditation as a social phenomenon.
