Annotation

The article examines the peculiarities of the emotional perception of the metropolitan urban space by citizens permanently or temporarily residing in it. The authors of the article draw a parallel with the idea of a polis city, which has the same status in ancient culture as a modern metropolis in our time. The specifics of the emotional landscape are revealed through the analysis of attitudes towards the city, its perception and identification with it by representatives of the student youth. The study’s respondents were students of the Moscow City Pedagogical University (bachelor’s and master’s degrees), who outlined the main dichotomies in the emotional perception of the city in free form (essays). The application of the method of emotion analysis has made it possible to expand, to a certain extent, the understanding of how the sociocultural, economic and geographical landscapes of the metropolis create a certain emotional background, individually perceived by young people. Emotions are considered as a reflection of a person’s mental state and an element of the structure of his intelligence, participating in the formation and choice of strategies of behavior in the urban environment, capable of causing both the experience of the most joyful feelings and the feeling of danger with developing emotional and cognitive overload. The research methodology is based on phenomenological and interpretative approaches, as well as semantic analysis of the textual content of students’ essays. The results of the research can be applied in solving problems related to the design of urban environments in order to improve the quality of life for city residents and minimize the shortcomings that hinder their urban self-identification and involvement in the development of their city.
