Annotation

The relevance of the study is due to the contradictory attitude towards the phenomenon of utopia and the dynamics of the utopian consciousness itself. The article is devoted to the problem of the foundations of the typology of utopias. The purpose of the article is to analyze the possibilities and limits of applicability of Robert Merton’s theory of social behavior for the analysis of utopias, including the analysis of the classification of utopias by the polish sociologist Jerzy Szatski, and also to identify commonalities in the approaches of the two sociologists. Listing common typologies of utopias, the authors shows the features and role of E. Shatsky’s typology in the body of research on utopias. The authors highlights the functional approach and attention to the problems of social dynamics as imperatives of both concepts. Problems of the typology of utopias are considered in the context of a discussion about the social role of utopia, its functions and reasons for its emergence.
