Annotation

The article addresses two topical issues of our time — migration and ethnic identity. The aim of the work is to analyze ethnic self-identification, ways of manifestation and maintenance of Buryat ethnicity in the migration context. The work is based on twenty-two interviews with well-educated and highly qualified Buryat migrants in Western Europe. As a result of the study, the actualization of ethnicity in a foreign cultural environment was revealed, although strategies and practices for the manifestation and maintenance of ethnic identity are on the scale of a continuum from indifference to an active and conscious attitude to it (“ethnic activism”). The study has found that the extreme poles of these positions are less common than the most widespread strategies of “symbolic ethnicity” and “cultural identity”. Although at the symbolic level ethnicity is considered by most migrants primordial, at the real level it has an instrumental and situational character, without affecting the daily practices of their life and becoming the subject of reflection. The study also showed the weakening of group identification strategies and strengthening of individual and cosmopolitan strategies among Buryat migrants, especially young ones. In general, the authors note 22 ВЕСТНИК МГПУ  СЕРИЯ «ФИЛОСОФСКИЕ НАУКИ» a wide variety of strategies and practices for the manifestation and maintenance of ethnic identity, depending on a number of factors such as family upbringing, peculiarities of migrants’ socialization and inculturation, age, life plans, family status.
