Annotation
This article analyzes the key philosophical ideas expounded by Ibn Zafar al-Siqilli in “Sulwan al-muta‘ fi ‘udwan al-atba‘” (“The Consolation of Rulers in the Hostility of Subjects”). It examines five main virtues, or consolations (sulwan), which the author proposes as fundamental principles for effective and just governance: tafwid (en rusting
affairs to God), tasya or an-nasi (consolation through emulation), sabr (patience), al-rida (contentment), and zuhd (asceticism). The article analyzes how Ibn Zafar, drawing upon Qur’anic verses, prophetic hadiths, aphorisms, and extensive narrative illustrations from Persian, Arabic, and Greek history, transforms these virtues from religio-ethical concepts into pragmatic tools of political philosophy.
