Annotation
The article is dedicated to an analysis of N. G. Chernyshevsky’s early work, “On Poetry” (1854), which is a review of B. Ordynsky’s translation of Aristotle’s “Poetics”. It focuses on Chernyshevsky’s reconstruction of ancient aesthetics and his comparative analysis of Plato’s and Aristotle’s views on art. Despite Chernyshevsky’s materialistic beliefs,
the article comes to a surprising conclusion: he recognizes the depth of Plato’s aesthetic theory, which viewed art in connection with “life”, but explains the dominance of Aristotle’s system due to its clear theoretical formalism. The issue of the accuracy of Aristotle’s legacy in the context of his time is also addressed.
