Annotation
The article treats A. Chekhov’s and A. Volynsky’s views on philosophy. Unlike Chekhov, a convinced materialist and scientist, who was always skeptical about philosophy
as a means to comprehend and explain the world (recognizing only its empirical reality), Volynsky, known as a forerunner of the Russian religious and philosophical Renaissance at the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries, takes advantage of critical philosophy in his struggle against dogmatism, utilitarianism and unbelief puculiar to the intellectual climate in Russia of his time. The author analyzes the history of the complex relationship between the writer and the literary critic and raises the question to what extent Volynsky’s appeal to philosophy and reflections on eternal truth is apt in case of literature, criticidm and journalism. Should the latter be also based on unshakable philosophical foundations?
